Freedom Readers is a multi-generational literacy program that empowers parents to boost their children's reading skills and create lasting change in our public schools. By connecting education and workforce opportunities, we open pathways for economic mobility—parents to become educators and literacy champions in their communities.
To-date, we've trained 435 parents in the Science of Reading curriculum adopted by the State of Indiana, equipping them with practical tools to improve literacy at home.
Our Literacy in Action workshops provide hands-on activities for parents and children to practice reading skills together, building confidence and connection. Children are welcome at our workshops, where parents and young readers learn and grow together.
The Freedom Readers Fellowship takes this mission further—preparing parents for careers in education through a 16-week training program in partnership with Marian University, the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI), and executive coaches. Fellows graduate ready to work in public schools, having completed more than 870 hours of training and earning $20/hour as Instructional Assistants.
In Marion County, where only 26% of 3rd–8th graders are proficient in English Language Arts, Freedom Readers is closing the literacy gap. Through the workshops and fellowship, Freedom Readers empowers parents, uplifts students, and strengthens our school system.
